Documentary Review: Finders Keepers

Available For Streaming
On Netflix as of 3/21/16

Finder Keepers is a documentary made by the same
producer who helped produce the instant classic The King of Kong.

John Whisnant purchased a grill in an auction. The story should have ended there. However when he opened up the grill to see what was inside he found a human leg. Whisnant, never one to miss an opportunity for publicity contacted the police to report what he found, but then called the media. It turns out the leg had once belonged to a man named John Wood who had lost his leg in a tragic plane crash where his father was killed.

So the story is about the fight over the leg and who is the rightful owner.

However, it goes much deeper than that. The story is really about John who never recovered emotionally from the plane crash and the guilt he fills wondering if he could have done more. He filled that hurt with heavy drug use and despair... and Shannon who never received attention from his father and is desperate to use the leg to get publicity and have his face in front of the camera, for whatever reason, to fill the void left by his late father.

So what you get in the end while watching this documentary is that the leg is simply a metaphor for both of these individual's broken relationships, guilt, and desire.

Along the way the story takes so many wild turns, that include appearances on Jerry Springer and the Judge Mathis show. It's quite a wild ride.

I give this documentary 3 out of 5 stars
