I've had some tell me that as a Christian I should have nothing to do with guns or weapons of any kind. I say nonsense.. That doesn't mean I have the right to go out and use it improperly or unsafely. Clearly murder would be an improper use, then again murder is always wrong. People kill, not Guns. As Larry The Cable Guy Said: "Blaming a killing on the gun is like blaming the pencil for spelling errors."We have laws that protect my gun ownership, and even more importantly we have a second amendment that ensures my right to actually have the gun in the first place.
Jesus may not have owned a gun, but I believe that he would have had no qualms against others owning them for the right reasons. Jesus actually told his disciples to buy weapons for self defense..take a look at Luke 22: 35-38: 35 He said to them, "When I sent you out without a purse, bag, or sandals, did you lack anything?" They said, "No, not a thing." 36 He said to them, "But now, the one who has a purse must take it, and likewise a bag. And the one who has no sword must sell his cloak and buy one. 37 For I tell you, this scripture must be fulfilled in me, "And he was counted among the lawless'; and indeed what is written about me is being fulfilled." 38 They said, "Lord, look, here are two swords." He replied, "It is enough."
I believe that God loves life and he does not take the senseless taking of a life as a good thing at all. In fact it angers him greatly. So we are called to protect life and do so with force if necessary. Now, when is force necessary...that is a question that I am not as eager to put out an opinion on because I honestly don't fully know. I wouldn't necessarily own a gun to protect myself...my wife and kids is a different story.
I have more to say on this subject, but Mark and Tim get mad if I make these posts too long...so I'll make this a two parter. An obvious subject in part II will be the use of guns for hunting...
